The Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild (WACG) is an organization for artists and
crafts people in the Myrtle Beach area. The Guild has hosted juried
exhibitions in Myrtle Beach for regional artists since its inception
in 1969. In 1970, the Guild began purchasing award-winning pieces from
each of its annual juried exhibitions. This practice continued for a
decade, until 1980 when the group decided that it could no longer continue
to amass a collection without a permanent facility to house the art. Indeed,
it was the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild, inspired by a desire to find a home
for its collection, that was greatly responsible for the early discussions and
the acquisition of the Springmaid Villa that eventually became the Franklin G.
Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum (see History).
The Guild gifted the Museum with 53 works of art--its entire collection of award-winning pieces collected during the decade of 1970 to 1980. Many of the artists in the Collection have gone on to build distinguished careers in the quarter century since their work was first purchased. Myrtle Beach's Art Museum is proud to house the Guild Collection and believes its significance as a statement of regional art increases with each passing year.
