Map Collection
historic map This collection was a 1999 gift to the Franklin G. Burroughs-Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum from the George J. Bishop Family. George and Dorothy Bishop, who are known in Myrtle Beach for their development of the former shoppers' paradise Waccamaw Pottery, began collecting antique maps and prints of the Carolinas in 1987. The 30 pieces in the Collection date from 1606 to 1863 and include historic gems such as a map of Horry District (1825) by Robert Mills who is regarded as the United States' first architect, a hand-drawn map of Charleston Harbor (1861) during the Civil War, and the map Mark Catesby included in his celebrated Natural History of Carolina, Florida, and the Bahama Islands (1731). The Bishop Collection also has historic prints of regional interest, such as engravings of Francis Marion and Charleston-area Civil War scenes from Harper's Weekly. Viewers of this collection delight in the artistic appeal of the maps and prints, as well as their historic significance.
