Then
and Now: Selected Artists from the Permanent Collection
Sixteen Artists and Various Media
January
14 – April 22, 2007
Opening
Reception: Sunday, January 14, 2007, 2 until 4 p.m.
Celebrating its 10th anniversary throughout 2007, the museum appropriately
begins the year with Then and Now: Selected Artists from the
Permanent Collection. Though the museum officially opened in 1997, the
Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild assembled the permanent collection with
Purchase Awards from their annual exhibitions between 1970 and 1980.
Remarkable
for its time, the collection has gained wide-spread appreciation through
the ensuing years. Noted artists included in the collection are Sigmund
Abeles of New York, Denny Mecham and Kincheloe of North Carolina, Allan
Taylor of Georgia, and South Carolinians: Carl Blair, Eva Carter, Jack
Dowis, Dixie Dugan, Darell Koons, Jean McWhorter, Alice Ballard Munn,
Alex Powers, Ouida Salvo, and Betty Anglin Smith.
Each artist will have their works from the permanent collection shown
along with works created within the past two years. Fascinating changes
have evolved over the past 36 years since the collection began, with some
artists now working in completely different media. Many of the artists
will be present for the opening to discuss these changes and visit with
friends from the past.
