Ninth Annual Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild Juried Exhibition
April 27 – May 26, 2006

Opening reception: Thursday, April 27, 2006 from 5:30 until 7:30 p.m.

Gallery Talk at 6 p.m.

Open Hands Always popular with area residents and visitors, the WACG Juried Exhibition combines the work of professional and amateur artists. A diverse display of oils, watercolors, mixed media, ceramics, sculpture, etc., this springtime favorite appeals to all ages. Close to 60 artists from around the region will vie for top honors. The show is juried and judged by professional artists, with cash awards given and art offered for sale.

With 71 two-dimensional and three-dimensional works in a range of media from computer-manipulated photography and graphics to decorated gourds that resemble pottery, the show is a perennially popular event with locals and visitors. Works in more traditional media are also represented, however, including paintings, sculpture and at least one jewelry entry.

Judge and juror for the competition is Robin Salmon, Vice President for Collections and Curator of Sculpture at Brookgreen Gardens. Salmon will provide a descriptive tour of the exhibit at Thursday's reception, offering insights on how the works were selected for inclusion in the exhibit and for prizes.

“We are fortunate to have someone [like Salmon] judging, who's really knowledgeable about art and able to be objective even though they know the artists personally,” said Phyllis Dunn, show director and a former president of the 200-member Guild.

Awards to be given are the $600 Rebecca Bryan Best in Show Award; $500 First Place, $400 Second Place, and $350 Third Place awards; and 10 Honorable Mentions. A memorial category was added to this year's event, allowing community members to create special awards in honor of a loved one.
