An
Everlasting Piece: Quilts from the McKissick Museum, University of
South Carolina
March 3-April 17, 2005
Opening Reception Thursday,
March 3
6:00 - 8:00 p.m

A remarkable display
of nineteenth and twentieth century quilting work – including crazy
quilts and other regional styles – is our current exhibit at the
Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. Chapin Art Museum.
“I think
the rich history behind this particular quilt collection will make this
exhibit very enticing for visitors.” Patricia Goodwin, Executive
Director of the Museum said.
Many quilts in An Everlasting Piece: Quilts from the McKissick Museum,
University of South Carolina are positively dated; several were crafted
between 1821 and 1900. The most ornate in the collection are crazy quilts
from the Victorian era. This quilting style became popular nationwide
after women’s magazines featured articles about the crazy quilts,
and was popular with wealthier quilt makers often including remnants of
silk ties.
Techniques included in the quilt exhibit are piecework, appliqué,
embroidery and strip quilt. Quilt styles exemplify distinct characteristics
of quilts from South Carolina, southern regions and also national trends.
The exhibit also displays the distinct transition from European styles
to those distinctly American.

The Museum also houses the Waccamaw Arts and Crafts Guild Permanent Collection,
which includes award-winning works the Guild purchased from 1970 to 1980
from its annual fall exhibition. The Guild donated that collection to
the Museum when it opened in 1997.
With approximately 200 current members, the Guild was founded in 1969
to encourage fine arts and crafts in the community. It meets the third
Saturday of each month. Interested persons with questions can call Phyllis
Dunn at 238-4628.
